| The Case of Mary
Mary was a client of Dr. Callahan’s who had a severe phobia of water. She panicked whenever she saw much water, even rain or the sight of water on television. The mere thought of water produced enormous anxiety, and nightmares about water plagued her. Dr. Callahan had been working with Mary for a year and a half, using therapies such as hypnosis, ET, cognitive and behavior therapies, breathing, systematic desensitization, suggestion, etc. He used Mary’s reaction to the pool at his home office as a benchmark for her progress. When Mary started therapy, she could not go anywhere near the pool. It upset her terribly just to think about it. After a year and a half of therapy and constant encouragement, she was able to sit with her feet dangling in the shallow end of the pool, although she felt extremely uncomfortable and panicked doing so. Nonetheless, Dr. Callahan was pleased with what he regarded as significant progress. But he was not satisfied. Dr. Callahan had previously been introduced to Applied Kinesiology. His fascination with the processes involved in this phenomenon led him to explore energy systems such as the meridian system (as described by Chinese medicine in the practice of acupuncture). He was aware that each meridian was associated with a particular organ of the body. During one particular therapy session, Mary described the feeling in her stomach she experienced when thinking about water. Knowing that the treatment point for the meridian associated with the stomach was under the eye, Dr. Callahan asked Mary to tap under her eyes, thereby stimulating that particular meridian. Mary did so, and immediately jumped up and ran to the pool, aware that she was no longer feeling anxiety at the thought of it. With this simple procedure performed only one time over 20 years ago, all traces of this severe life-long problem, including the nightmares, were gone--and have not returned. The reason Mary’s problem was eliminated is that the perturbations contained in her thought field associated with water were completely removed by that simple treatment. The procedure to eliminate Mary’s particular problem was extremely simple-merely tapping one point. Dr. Callahan soon learned that it was not quite that simple for most people. As a result, he researched and experimented until he developed his discovery into the now very powerful and effective Thought Field Therapy. The research and experimentation done today by Dr. Callahan and many of his trainees continue to expand the applications and accessibility of this marvelous healing tool. |
